ABOUT ME

Hi, I'm Tayfun Selen.

WHERE I COME FROM

I immigrated to America in 1996 and worked as a gas station attendant in Madison, NJ. I earned my citizenship in 2008 and currently live in Chatham Township with my wife who is a small business owner and daughter who is a junior in college. When I arrived in the US, I didn't speak English, I didn't have any money on me, but I wanted the opportunity you can only get in America. November 19, 2008, the proudest moment of my life: I became an American citizen.

COMMITMENT TO PUBLIC SERVICE

New Jersey should be a great place to live, work, raise a family, and retire because of the so many volunteers. As your Congressman, I will work to make it even better. Currently, I serve as a Morris County Commissioner and I work as a Senior Vice President of Administration at Lincoln Educational Services focusing on skilled trades education. I believe that the traditional college is not for everyone and trade education is a great alternative for our kids. I am a CPA and certified as a Six Sigma Black Belt and LEED AP (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).

While living in Chatham Borough, I volunteered as a member of the Zoning Board for 5 years from 2008 to 2012.

As a Morris County Commissioner, I held the lines on taxes, while helping to lead the county’s lead the Morris County Covid-19 Recovery Task Force to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, and I ensured that county tax dollars were focused on key priorities like public safety, infrastructure, education, and the environment. As the Mayor of Chatham Township, I cut municipal property taxes, earned a rare AAA credit rating, and reduced spending by over $200,000. I also volunteer for Madison Rotary Club, as the club President, board member at the New Jersey Board of Nursing, and Advisory Board Member at Montclair State University’s Feliciano School of Business.

I voted for the Morris County budget that did not increase county taxes and helped community organizations adapt to the post-COVID economy. I also stood up to powerful energy company JCP&L’s inadequate response to storm Isaias and called the resignation of the CEO and return of 2 months of utility bills for you.

I am running for Congress in NJ-11 because I want to give back to my community by helping the people of New Jersey and my country who gave me so much along the way.

I have a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from Istanbul Technical University and an MBA from Montclair State University. I achieved certification as a Six Sigma Black Belt by Rutgers University and Lockheed Martin. I am also a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) accredited professional certified by U.S. Green Building Council and a certified public accountant (CPA).
